This was a marmite book, the majority loved it but a minority were unimpressed. Positive comments included gripping from the word go, good portrayal of the Jewish persecution, historically accurate with a wealth of research. Most people also approved of the ending. On the negative side a lot of members found the book unnecessarily long, some bits dragged. Some members couldn’t see the point of the long description of Wolfgang’s life in the jazz clubs & his fascination with his young fan as this had little relevance to the rest of the story. The swearing was also an unpopular element, that and the modern language seemed out of place. The colloquial language used by Billie was also deemed excessive. However this was a popular book with an overall score of 8.
